The famous Ivorian singer encourages positivity despite the health crisis, with her sixth album, recorded in Africa in the midst of a pandemic.
Dobet Gnahoré is a real star in the Ivory Coast. The daughter of the great musician Boni Gnahoré, she is also known for her rich, emotional interpretations, but also for her explosive choreography.
On her album, Couleur, the artist returns to her native land, transitioning to Afropop. While living in France, Dobet traveled to Africa in early 2020 to reconnect with the local underground music scene. This upbeat album perfectly illustrates the energy of a booming continent, situated between electro grooves and wild dance rhythms.
“Lève-toi,” released alongside Yabonga Lova, is the first single from the album, aimed at motivating the listener. The voice of Dobet resounds: “You can’t get anything without effort. Wake up. Even in your moments of difficulty. Wake up. Tomorrow will be fine. Tomorrow will be fine. Tomorrow will be fine. Get up.” As for “Yakané,” which means “Today,” it is a hymn to female empowerment proven by a sense of omnipresent sisterhood in this video. Dobet delivers a powerful message, like a queen sitting on her throne: “The time when the man commanded the woman is over. Today, the world is changing in favor of women. Women’s independence is today.”
